Take a Word: Blackbird

"BLACKBIRDING"
(click image to enlage to see the detail)

Thought I would give you a 'snippet' of part of Australia's dark past!
Blackbirding refers to the recruitment of people through trickery and kidnappings to work on the sugar cane plantations of Australia and Fiji.
Those ‘blackbirded’ were recruited from the indigenous populations of nearby Pacific islands or northern Queensland. In the early days of the pearling industry in Broome, local Aboriginal people were blackbirded from the surrounding areas, including aboriginal people from desert areas.
Over a period of 40 years, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, native non-European labourers for the sugar cane fields of Queensland, were “recruited” from Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia as well as Niue. The “recruitment” process almost always included an element of coercive recruitment (not unlike the press-gangs once employed by the Royal Navy in England) and indentured servitude. Some 62,000 South Sea Islanders were taken to Australia.

Collage Obsession: Transform

Transform.

Welcome to my first challenge for the Collage Obsession team.
I offer you the word 'Transform'... this image is my interpretation. As tattoos can ‘transform’ a person’s image.. as a chameleon is transformed into camouflage… the challenge? ‘Transform’ anything into something else. The Challenge is open to all kinds of art: digital, ATC’s, cards, journals, etc. There are no rules, let your imagination take you places. Create and have fun.
Thanks for taking part. Glenys.

Three Muses: Black and White

Pinning Our Hopes.....

Black and White was the theme for the Three Muses...I could not go past the changes within the world and 'pin my hopes' onto a closer relationship with in the different cultures.

The Bar has been Raised

I posted this comment on Take a Word the other day...thought you would like to read what I said...

I have just scrolled through all of the challenges that have been posted so far, left a message on most... but I would like to comment on the standard of the work...if I may!!
I have been with the 3 Muses and Take a Word for about 12 months now and I an truly astonished in the calibre of the challenges. The bar seems to have been lifted, with the very high standard that is in the collages that I am seeing now. I would, as an artist and a fan of these pages, like to congratulate all of the artists that contribute to these challenges and say 'extremely' well done on what you are producing at the moment. It is a credit to you all and it is a pleasure to scroll through all of this fabulous inspirational art work....what more can I say..

Three Muses: Fashion

DEDICATED FOLLOWERS OF FASHION!
"HARAKUKU"
I would like to introduce you to the amazing 'fashion' of Japenese 'fashionistas'. This is what the site says about the "HARAKUKU' style.
Just simply amazing!
Harajuku clothing style involves mixing and (mis) matching different fashions and styles. Harajuku fashion changes and evolves constantly, sometimes mixing traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos and geta sandals with other styles. Everything from punk, goth to designer clothes can be mixed and mismatched with colorful accessories to create a unique and individual style.

Take a Word: Botanical

From big things little things grow!!
It is the botanical names that interest me!! Big long names! Many unpronounceable to the 'layman', such as
X Cupressocyparis leylandii : Leyland Cypress
Xanthorroea australis : Australian Grass Tree
Taraxacum ceratophorum : Dandelion...
so I thought that I would plant the names and see how they grow!!
They are doing well.... new shoots everywhere!

Three Muses: Artist of choice.

Secret Artists.
.................................................
I have always been very fascinated with the street art of the world...not 'tagging'... but 'proper' spray can art that has been very much maligned for many years.
The tide has turned and there are now many 'outdoor' galleries in lane ways, on buses, on abandoned anything...but in Melbourne, Australia they have taken it a step further and have opened galleries in lane ways that change about every couple of months. Some of these works are now being 'collected' by the National Gallery of Victoria as part of their art collection. How do they do this? By simply buying a piece on the wall and covering it with a sheet of perspex to keep it from being covered with other art.
It blows my mind... the talent of these "Secret Artists"!!

Cabaret Reflection

Not that I have much time.... but of recent weeks I have given myself a 'holiday' from my normal 'job' ( do I have a normal job? never sure about that!!) to play with Photoshop, catch up with my blogs and learning a whole lot of new techniques, so that I can be up to speed when I do the challenges for Collage Obsession, Take a Word and Three Muses
Cabaret Reflection is just one of the 'trial' pieces... different, eh?

A Rainbow at the end of Turmoil.

We live in a country of extremes.... bush fires on one side of the country and devasting, deadly floods on the other.

I am pasting a poem that my 15 year old grandaughter wrote, that really captures how we all feel and how we will come through all that Mother Nature wants to throw at us.

Rainbow

By the time we sensed it, it was too late
We had no warning
It just came and took away

Everything

It was strong
we tried so hard to get away
but we couldn’t

It was tall
It towered the trees
It destroyed
every
last
breath

It was destructing
nothing was left

It took away
our pride

our Happiness

our life

but only for a while

Still, Im waiting for my
rainbow
to tell me everything's going to be alright

because I know it won’t be
at least not for a while.
